A man in a critically ill condition in hospital after he fell while fixing lights at the family home ahead of a relative's funeral has been named.

Pat Bowens from Pollanalty, Cloonfad on the Roscommon/Mayo border fell from a truck yesterday afternoon not long after he heard of a relative's unexpected death at St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin.

It is understood the man was putting up lights outside the family home so the house would be lit up for those calling to sympathise.

The 44-year old was thrown 20ft into the air before landing on concrete. He sustained severe head injuries in the fall.

The married father-of-two was rushed to Roscommon County Hospital before being airlifted to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

The local community of Cloonfad is said to be in shock following the incident.
