Fine Gael expels race slur mayor

Published 21/02/2012

A Fine Gael councillor who stepped down as mayor over controversial racist comments vowed to carry on as an independent last night after being expelled from the party.

Darren Scully (38), from Naas, Co Kildare, stepped down as mayor of Naas last November.

Last night, Mr Scully confirmed he had received a letter from the party's general secretary informing him that he had been expelled.

Speaking on Kildare FM in November, Mr Scully spoke of the "aggressive attitude" of "black Africans" and vowed not to represent their interests as a councillor.
