Five arrested in drugs haul

A drugs haul worth more than five million euros has been seized in a series of raids in Dublin in which five people were arrested, the Garda said.

Almost a third of a metric ton of cannabis (330kg) was taken in two swoops in the north of the capital in an operation involving the Garda National Drugs Unit and local drugs police yesterday.

A force spokeswoman said: "The total value of the drugs seized, subject to analysis, is in the region of 5.1 million euros."

Three men, one in his 20s, one in his 30s and one in his 70s, were arrested in a raid on a van and a car on Ballymun Road. Gardai recovered 90kg of cannabis resin at the scene.

In a second raid 240kg of herbal cannabis was found at a unit at North Dublin Business Park, where a fourth man, in his 30s, was arrested.

A woman in her 30s was arrested in the Ballymun area a short time later.

All five are being held on suspicion of drug trafficking.
