An armed gang broke into a man's house and held him at gunpoint before assaulting him with a hammer, it has emerged.

A number of men, masked and dressed in wigs, forced their way into the property in Redgap, Rathcoole, south Co Dublin, at around 9.20pm on Tuesday and stole two legally held shotguns.

They held the man at gunpoint and hit him on the head with the hammer.

It is understood the raiders fired a number of shots at the man's car as they fled after his son tried to block them in.

The man was taken to hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

His wife, also in the house at the time, was uninjured, but she was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Gardai have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
