A 24-year-old man has appeared before Dublin District Court this evening charged with the murder of David Byrne (33) at the Regency Hotel in North Dublin.

Patrick Hutch, with an address at Champions Avenue in Dublin's north inner city, appeared before an out-of-hours sitting of the district court at the Courts of Criminal Justice complex on Parkgate Street.

Giving evidence, Detective Sergeant Mick Mulligan said he charged the defendant at 6.28pm at Ballymun Garda Station this evening.

Det Sgt Mulligan told the court the defendant made no reply to the charge.

Judge Hugh O'Donnell granted legal aid to the defendant, who was represented by solicitor John Feeney. No application was made for bail.

A bearded Patrick Hutch, who was wearing a blue tracksuit top and navy bottoms, remained silent during the brief court appearance.

Judge Hugh O'Donnell remanded the defendant in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court at 10.30am on May 25th.

David Byrne died after he was shot a number of times in the lobby while attending a boxing weigh-in at the popular Dublin hotel on Friday, February 5th.

Two other men were injured during the incident.
