Hundreds backing bid for memorial to Bobby the donkey
Hundreds of people have signed an online campaign for a memorial to a donkey who died of starvation.
The male donkey, named Bobby, was found close to death lying in 18 inches of slurry in a shed in Fanad, Co Donegal.
Rescuers believe he may have been injured and trampled on by 11 bulls which had also been put in the enclosure, close to the popular tourist trail to Fanad Lighthouse on the Atlantic coast.
The Donegal Donkey Sanctuary, backed by gardai, removed the animal to their charity headquarters in Raphoe but he was found to be shockingly malnourished with pneumonia setting in.
A vet was called out to help ease the animal's pain but he was so frail he died in the early hours of Saturday.
The alarm was raised by a local woman.
A second donkey had been in the same enclosure but had vanished days earlier.
Danny Curran, who founded the donkey sanctuary with his wife Sandra four years ago, said it was the worst case of alleged neglect they had ever encountered.
