Irish navy rescues 100 people, including three pregnant women, off Libya's coast

The Irish Naval Service rescued 100 people, including three pregnant women, off the coast of Libya on Wednesday morning.

The operation took place at 8.15am Irish time 87 kilometres north east of Tripoli.

The LÉ Samuel Beckett was aided at the scene by the Italian ITN ALISEO, its helicopter assets and Medicins Sans Frontiére (MSF).

An MSF vessel the MV Dignity took 100 people, 27 of whom are women, 3 of whom are pregnant, on board.

The LÉ Samuel Beckett now remains in the patrol area.

The Irish Defence Forces ship has directly rescued 562 people since its mission began.

The LÉ Eithne and LÉ Niamh rescued 7397​ people collectively during their previous missions in the Mediterranean.
