Irishman arrested in connection with alleged bongo-drum murder of tourist in India

An Irishman has been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of a tourist in India this weekend.

The Irishman (49) was arrested in connection with the death of Norwegian tourist Sundra Erdemir (41) in Goa in south India on Saturday, local media has reported.

It is alleged that he hit the Norwegian on the head with a wooden drum at a house in 7am on Saturday.

Mr Erdemir sustained severe injuries and died on Saturday night at the Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs told Independent.ie: “We’re aware of the case and have been in contact with our embassy in New Delhi.”

It is understood that the Irishman and Erdemir had been on good terms and would visit each other's homes regularly.

The Irishman arrived at Erdemir's house on Friday night with the intention of staying over, according to the complaint filed by the victim's wife Kinara Lundberg.

The pair then spent the night at Erdemir's father-in-law's house, located next to John's accommodation.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, the accused and the victim allegedly got into a heated argument.

A police investigation is underway.

The accused appeared before the judicial magistrate first class (JMFC), Mapusa, where he was remanded into six days in police custody.
