Man arrested in Essex over Dublin gangland murder

By PA Reporter

A man has been arrested in Essex in connection with a murder linked to a bloody gangland feud in Dublin.

Gareth Hutch, a 35-year-old father of one, was shot dead last May in broad daylight outside his flat a few hundred yards from Dublin's main thoroughfare, O'Connell Street.

His murder marked another violent chapter in the ongoing feud between the Hutch and Kinahan crime gangs.

Gareth Hutch was a nephew of Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch.

The Hutch family and their associates have been repeatedly targeted by underworld rivals since the audacious gun attack on a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel in north Dublin last February.

David Byrne, from the Crumlin area of Dublin and an associate of the Kinahan family, was killed in that incident.

His murder was said to have been in retaliation for the fatal shooting of Gary Hutch, another nephew of Gerry Hutch, in September last year on the Costa del Sol after he fell foul of the Kinahan outfit and their operations in Spain.

The UK arrest comes a day after a 39-year-old woman appeared in court in Dublin charged with Gareth Hutch's murder.

A Garda spokesman said the UK's National Crime Agency and London Metropolitan Police were involved in the operation in Romford. The arrest was made on foot of a European Arrest warrant.
