Man back in custody after gun death

A man arrested for the murder of his ex-wife after a near eight-hour stand-off with gardai is back in Garda custody after being released from hospital.

Patricia Kierans, a 54-year-old mother of four, was found shot dead in her former family home on the outskirts of in Bailieborough, Co Cavan, on Thursday night.

Her estranged husband Oliver, who allegedly barricaded himself in a pub armed with a shotgun, was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning after trained garda negotiators brought the stand-off to an end.

A Garda spokesman said the suspect is back in Bailieborough Garda Station since 6pm after being released from Cavan General Hospital where he was taken for medical attention.

He can be questioned for up to seven days.

The alarm was raised at 6pm on Thursday when the victim's sister reported her missing.

After officers went to the Square Bar in the town to speak to Mrs Kierans' estranged husband at 7pm, the 56-year-old allegedly emerged from the basement brandishing a fireman and threatened gardai.

Mrs K ie rans was no longer living with her husband at the family home in Drumbannon, where her body was found.

Three of their four children have emigrated to Australia and the fourth was travelling to meet his siblings when he was told the news.

Gardai have appealed for pub customers and anyone who spotted anything suspicious around the house since 10am that morning to come forward.
