Man critical after gardai car chase

A man is critically ill in hospital after being involved in a car crash while being pursued by gardai, according to the force's official watchdog.

A Garda Ombudsman investigator was called to the scene of the incident in the Templeogue area of Dublin shortly after midnight last night.

The man in his early 30s sustained the injuries after losing control of a vehicle on the city side of the Spawell Roundabout.

The Garda Ombudsman said he was being observed by gardai, who were responding to a previous incident involving the man at the time.

He was rushed by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital, where he is reported to be in a critical condition.

The Garda Ombudsman said the incident was reported to the watchdog under the Garda Siochana Act, which requires an independent investigation where death or serious harm has occurred to a person that has been in contact with a garda.
