A man is fighting for his life after being gunned down outside a gym beside a toddlers play centre.
The 45-year-old victim is believed to have been shot at least twice in the upper body at Balbriggan Retail Park in north Dublin shortly after 11am on Friday.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene shortly afterwards rushed him to Beaumont Hospital where he is being treated for his wounds.
His condition has been described as critical.
The shooting happened close to a children's play club in the same retail park, which was open at the time.
The man, originally from Ballymun in north Dublin and who is known to gardai, survived a previous gun attack in August 2010.
During that attempt, he was shot a number of times in a pub in Bettystown, Co Meath, but was released from hospital two weeks later.
In a subsequent High Court case, he claimed gardai were colluding with crime journalists to set him up to be murdered and that evidence of threats to his life had been withheld.
Describing himself as a businessman, involved in security, the victim was a known associate of assassinated gangster Eamon Dunne.
He is also known to be a target of the Criminal Assets Bureau.
Investigating gardai have sealed off the scene of the latest suspected gangland shooting and technical experts are carrying out a forensic examination.
They have appealed for anyone with information or who witnessed anything suspicious in the area to get in contact with them.
