A 21-year-old man has died in hospital following an explosion at an industrial estate in Co Cork.

The man had been welding at B&C Services at Marlhill Court in Youghal when an explosion occurred at around 9:25am on Wednesday.

It is understood the man was injured while welding an oil tank on the outskirts of the town.

The man is believed to have received severe burns from the blast and was knocked unconscious.

Emergency services attended the scene and the injured man was later airlifted to CUH via the Irish Coastguard Sikorski helicopter Rescue 117 from Waterford.

Two units from the Cork County Fire Service also responded to the incident.

The Republic's Health and Safety Authority said that it had been notified about the explosion and that it was investigating.
