A man had died hours after being arrested by Gardai for public-order offences in Killarney

A man found dead in the vicinity of a Co Kerry hospital has been named as Nigel Leigh.

The body of the 42-year-old, from Fossa, Killarney, was discovered by a member of the public close to Kerry General Hospital at about 7am.

He had been arrested for public order offences near his home yesterday.

Gardai said that shortly after his arrival at Killarney Garda Station an ambulance was called and he was taken to hospital.

The Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission has been asked to carry out an independent investigation because Mr Leigh was in contact with Gardai prior to his death.

In a statement, the GSOC said: "The investigation into the circumstances which led to his death continues."

Ombudsman investigators spent much of the day examining the scene and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them o n 1890 600 800.
