A 28-year-old man has died after being stabbed in a street attack in Waterford.

A 35-year-old is been quizzed by gardai after the death of the man found in New Street at around 3.20am on Saturday.

Police said the injured man was involved in "an altercation with another male".

A spokesman said: "On arrival at the scene gardai discovered a 28-year-old male had been stabbed. He was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"A 35-year-old male was arrested nearby and is currently detained ... at Waterford Garda Station."

He added that the area was sealed off and urged anyone who saw anything in the New Street and John Street area of the city between 3am and 4am to call the incident room on 051 305300.
