A man in his 20s was killed when the car he was travelling in struck a wall in Co Galway.

The crash happened on the Baile Liam road outside the village of Spiddal, which sits on the shores of Galway Bay.

Gardai, fire and ambulance services all attended the scene.

The man was removed from the vehicle and taken to University Hospital Galway but was later pronounced dead.

The coroner has been notified.

Gardai remained at the scene on Thursday morning and road diversions were in place.

Garda forensic collision investigators are due to examine the scene later.
