Man shot dead on housing estate by bicycle gunman

A man in his 20s has been shot dead on a housing estate by a gunman on a bicycle.

Gardai said the murder occurred shortly after 5pm in the Greenhills area of Athy, Co Kildare and the victim was pronounced dead in hospital.

It is believed the killer fired a number of shots.

The victim was rushed to Naas General Hospital for emergency surgery but he was later pronounced dead.

The Offices of the State Pathologist have been notified and a post-mortem is to be carried out.

The scene of the shooting has been preserved for technical examination. No arrests have been made.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at Kildare station.

Gardai later said a man aged in his 40s was arrested following the murder.

He was taken in for questioning at Kildare Garda Station under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.

The arrested man can be held for seven days. Gardai said the dead man was aged 22.
