Mother dies in car canal plunge

A woman was killed and an eight-month-old baby injured when their car crashed in to a canal.

The 30-year-old woman was a passenger in a vehicle, when it entered the Grand Canal between Cloghan and Shannonbridge in Co Offaly.

She was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe but later pronounced dead.

The male driver and eight-month-old were also rushed to hospital with minor injuries.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses.
