Murder probe after man, 40, dies

A murder investigation is under way after a man died in hospital almost a week after a serious assault.

The 40-year-old Polish man, named locally as Krzysztof Ciesielski, died in hospital on Wednesday night.

A Garda spokesman said three men and one woman have been arrested and are being detained at Galway and Gort Garda Stations.

It is understood the victim sustained serious head injuries following a row in the Cullairbaun Estate on the Tuam Road in Athenry at around 11.30pm on May 30.

He was rushed to University Hospital Galway, where he has now died.

The Garda investigation was upgraded to murder following a post-mortem examination by the Deputy State Pathologist Dr Khalid Jabbar.
