A man and a woman remain in Garda custody after a 59-year-old man was found stabbed to death in his flat.

The pair, both aged in their 20s, were arrested in Sligo after the body of Martin Kivlehan, known locally as Matt, was discovered in his home in the town centre yesterday.

Detectives revealed a post mortem examination confirmed he had been stabbed.

Officers said they would not release further details of the circumstances of the murder but appealed for witnesses to come forward or for anyone who was in the vicinity of Mr Kivlehan's flat on Holborn Street from 10pm on Sunday to 1pm on the bank holiday Monday to contact gardai.

The pair who were arrested were being detained in Sligo station under section four of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Mr Kivlehan was a carpenter and well known locally as a musician. It is understood he lived alone in the flat in the centre of the town where he was found dead.
