Park murder victim was badly beaten

A homeless man was badly beaten before being found dead in a burning sleeping bag.

Detectives have launched a murder inquiry after the grim discovery in the early hours of the morning near the Wellington monument in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.

The unidentified man was so badly burned that DNA and dental records will have to be used to identify the remains.

A post-mortem has revealed he was also assaulted before he was discovered in a wooded area with his sleeping bag on fire.

Detectives at Cabra have appealed for witnesses in the area to come forward.

They have also urged anyone who has not seen a homeless friend or family member all day to make contact.
