Pensioner killed in Co Kerry farmhouse fire

A pensioner has been killed in a farmhouse fire in Co Kerry.

The body of a woman, aged in her mid 80s, was recovered from a two-storey property at Ballyferriter on the Dingle Peninsula just before midnight.

Her remains were taken to Kerry General Hospital and a post-mortem examination is being arranged.

At this stage gardai are not treating the blaze as malicious although the scene has been preserved for a technical examination.

A spokeswoman said: "The matter is under investigation."

It is understood the elderly woman lived alone.

Emergency services were called to the farmhouse at about 9pm on Saturday.

Crews from the Dingle Fire Brigade were on the scene first but called in additional resources from Tralee Fire Brigade.

Extensive damage appears to have been caused to the property with parts of the upstairs completely gutted.
