Rescue attempts will begin at first light to free a huge cargo ship after its engine seized off the coast of the Republic en route to Russia.

There are 13 people on board the stranded vessel, which is stranded 30 nautical miles south off the Old head of Kinsale.

The Irish Coast Guard has sent a tug from Cork to assist.

The 22,000-ton bulk carrier, which was transporting aluminium from Aughinish to St Petersburg in Russia, is around 700 feet long and 80 feet wide.

“The main engine gave up at 2.45pm. The tug from Cork, the Celtic Isle, is going out from Cork to the ship at the moment,” a spokesman from Valencia coast guard said.

“He should be with the vessel in the morning, but it will be tomorrow evening before they get in.”
