Rory McIlroy’s winning cap sold at auction

A cap worn by Rory McIroy during his victorious final rounds at the US Open last year has secured a handful of cash for the Irish Kidney Assocation.

The Holywood golfer’s cap was snapped up for €500 - £416 - by a mystery bidder at the charity auction at Rathbane golf club, Limerick the weekend.

Rory’s hat was among a sporting lot which went under the hammer in memory of local man Brian Hunt who died at the age of 26 last May from a rare kidney disease.

Mark Murphy of the Irish Kidney Association told the Irish Daily Mail that Rory’s cap, which had a reserve of €500 Euros, failed to sell during the auction. “However, we were approached later in the evening and offered €500 on the condition that the buyer’s details remained anonymous.”
