Runner dies after marathon collapse

An English runner who collapsed at the finish line of the Dublin marathon this week has died, organisers said.

Ricki Savage, 27, had been in a serious condition in a hospital in the Irish capital since taking ill immediately after completing the race on Monday.

In a statement, organisers of the Airtricity Dublin Marathon said he died at St Vincent's Hospital this afternoon.

"We would like to commend the St John's Ambulance medical team and all those in St Vincent's who looked after Mr Savage and express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased," they said.

The organisers asked that the family's privacy be respected.

The man was rushed to hospital as soon as he crossed the finishing line with a suspected heart attack.

Medics confirmed he had a pulse when he arrived at the nearby hospital but he remained in a serious condition until his death two days later.
