Search for body called off

A major search for a body after a car plunged into the Atlantic Ocean has been called off for the night.

Underwater divers wrapped up the operation at Byrne's Cove near Kilkee in Co Clare as weather and tidal conditions worsened.

Gardai said a car was seen plunging into the water at about 12.50am this morning.

It is understood it is being treated as a tragic accident.

A spokesman for the Coast Guard said navy divers were unable to recover the car from the water today and that the search would resume on Friday morning.

It is understood there was one occupant in the vehicle when it went into the water at Byrne's Cove - a popular swimming spot.

The Kilkee Coast Guard Unit and a helicopter were initially sent to the cliffs area in the early hours of this morning.

"We got a call late last night from a member of the public who actually saw the car go into the sea," the spokesman said.

"A search operation got under way and the gardai were informed."
