Short-term layoff for Clerys staff
Clerys department store in Dublin is to lay off 86 workers until storm damage to the famous building is repaired, it has announced.
Management at the landmark O'Connell Street store were forced to cease trading last month after parts of the roof fell through in heavy rainfall and suffered water damage.
Clerys said plans and activity to fully refurbish the department store are well under way and management is confident that it will reopen stronger than ever.
However, due to the extent of the damage, Clerys will not be fully operational in the short term.
"As a result it is with regret that 86 employees were informed that they are to be laid off on a temporary, short-term basis for at least four weeks," a spokesman said.
"Affected employees, primarily in sales and back-of-house functions, will remain Clerys employees during the temporary lay-off period."
Staff and union representatives were told of the development in meetings earlier today.
Clerys said some staff and management will remain fully employed.
"Their sole focus is on relaunching Clerys as soon as is practicably possible," it added.
