Sinn Fein slams Orange hall fire in Donegal
Sinn Fein has condemned an arson attack that destroyed an Orange hall in the Republic.
The blaze at Newtowncunningham in Co Donegal was discovered on Sunday morning.
Yesterday the Garda confirmed that the blaze was malicious.
Sinn Fein TD Padraig Mac Lochlainn described it as an attack on the entire community.
"Those responsible for this attack represent nobody but themselves," he said.
"I sincerely hope that those responsible will be brought to justice. I also want to convey the solidarity of the entire community in Donegal with the minority Protestant community at this time. I have no doubt that that community will unite together and rebuild the hall."
The Orange Order said the building had been completely gutted. Grand master Edward Stevenson said the fire had been started simultaneously in at least three different parts of the building.
"This is nothing other than a heinous hate crime and a physical manifestation of the ongoing demonisation of our institution by some in society," he said.
