Smuggled cigarettes seized in swoop
Almost four billion euro of cigarettes that were smuggled into Dublin disguised as sports socks have been seized.
Gardai and officers from the Revenue's Customs Service discovered the cigarettes in a Co Monaghan premises in an intelligence sweep on Saturday.
The nine million President brand cigarettes, which arrived at Dublin Port in a ship from Malaysia, are worth 3.8 million euro and could have cost the Exchequer 3.2 million.
"Revenue would like to remind anyone tempted to buy cheap cigarettes from an irregular source of supply that there is a high possibility they are buying counterfeit goods, which provide an unknown set of health risks as the product is not the subject of quality control," a Revenue spokesman said.
