St Patrick's Cathedral Dublin drone video reveals breath-taking views of the interior

Drone footage of St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin has surprised even the staff that work there with its bird's eye perspectives.

The aerial video (above), shot by Sky Pixels Ireland and sponsored by Fáilte Ireland, features breath-taking views of the interior.

The video also includes "footage of never before seen areas such as the organ and an aerial view of the Cathedral’s Victorian tiles," says Andrew Smith, the Cathedral's Education Officer.

The Cathedral hopes that the new video will attract the attention of potential overseas visitors, as well as people from throughout Ireland. It has been visited by almost 300,000 people so far this year.

St Patrick's current building dates from 1220, but the drone video is far from its first foray into modern technology.

A new Discovery Space opened recently, housed in the south transept of the historic building. Highlights of the new facility include a touch-screen table featuring interactive content on the building’s history; brass rubbings; a large jigsaw of one of the windows of the Cathedral; a small reference library and an AV unit.

The new area fuses the ancient and the modern, with many of the new elements made from 19th Century carved oak pews from the building.

The Cathedral also recently launched an app that automatically illuminates key points of interest - from Swift's grave to the Cathedral's impressive organ - on the screens of their mobile devices.

"This exciting new video showcases the beauty of our historical Cathedral in an innovative new way," said Dean of the Cathedral, the Very Revd Victor Stacey.

"It is a welcome addition to the Cathedral’s ongoing use of technology."

The music on the drone video is a recent arrangement of the popular song ‘In Dublin’s Fair City,’ and is performed by the Choristers of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.
