Stranded ministers miss Budget

Half of the Government's senior ministers narrowly missed the announcement of the Budget after they got stuck in a lift.

Transport Minister Leo Varadkar tweeted about the unlucky incident just 35 minutes before Finance Minister Michael Noonan took to his feet to unveil a string of tax hikes and tweaks.

"Stuck in lift with half the Cabinet on Budget Day. Late for RTE. What are the chances? #Budget2014," Mr Varadkar tweeted at 1.54pm.

It is understood he and a number of other ministers, including Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore, got stuck in Government Buildings after they emerged from a Cabinet meeting where they were holding final discussions and briefings on the budget.

Mr Varadkar was on his way to RTE, where he was to be interviewed about the 2.5 billion euro worth of tax hikes and spending cuts.
