Second hospital in Cork confirms outbreak of swine flu

A second hospital in Cork has confirmed an outbreak of swine flu.

Mercy University Hospital (MUH) confirmed a single case of swine flu just seven days after Cork University Hospital (CUH) confirmed its case.

A MUH spokesperson confirmed that control measures have been put in place at the hospital to minimise the risk of the infection spreading.

MUH said that only one named visitor per patient is now being allowed each day with no children being allowed visit patients.

The hospital stressed that outpatient clinics will operate as normal.

“There are two (other) cases of influenza and these patients have not contracted the H1N1 strain,” the MUH official said.

On February 20, CUH confirmed it had closed off one ward and imposed strict visitor restrictions after a single confirmed case of swine flu.

The flu, properly known as Influenza H1N1, is one of three strains of the virus that the seasonal flu jab protects against.

Both CUH and MUH have urged anyone who has flu-like symptoms to contact their GP before attending emergency departments.

The H1N1 strain of the flu virus is known as ‘swine flu’ because it was first detected in pigs and was responsible for the flu pandemic of 2009/2010.

Health experts have stressed that the current flu outbreak is not at pandemic levels.
