One of two teenage brothers caught up in a farm accident has died.

The 14-year-old died in hospital this evening after suffering fatal injuries in the incident involving a tractor and trailer in a sugar beet field in the Ballon area of Co Carlow.

Gardai said the boy, along with his 15-year-old brother, were rushed to hospital after the machinery ended up in a drainage dyke which contained water.

The alarm was raised at about 10.30am.

The second boy was said to be in a serious but stable condition in St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny.

It is not clear if both the boys were on the tractor and trailer as it overturned.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are being carried out by local gardai and the Health and Safety Authority.
