Three people have been arrested after a man in his late 30s was shot dead.

The murder happened near Waterloo in Blarney, Co Cork, at about 4pm on Thursday.

The suspects were detained shortly after the victim was attacked as he tried to flee from a van he was driving.

It is understood he was shot a number of times.

A Garda spokesman said the three were taken in for questioning at Gurranabraher and Mayfield stations in Cork city.

They are being held under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The State Pathologist's Office has been notified and a post-mortem examination is expected to take place on Friday.
