Three people have been killed in a car crash in Co Laois.

The single-vehicle accident happened on the Rathdowney to Abbeylix Road (R433) at about 3am this morning.

It is understood the car hit a road sign about three miles outside Rathdowney.

The 20-year-old male driver and two women aged 20 and 35 were pronounced dead at the scene.

A 16-year-old male passenger was taken to Tullamore General Hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening.

Gardai have said the road will remain closed until at least lunchtime in order to facilitate an examination by forensic collision investigators.
