A tourist cycling over one of Ireland's highest mountain passes has died after crashing into a ditch, police said.

The woman, in her 30s and understood to be from Germany, was travelling along the famed Conor Pass on the Dingle peninsula in Co Kerry. She was travelling with her boyfriend.

Weather conditions were said to be poor and she was descending the pass at around 10.40am yesterday when her bike "left the road and hit a ditch", investigating gardai said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body has been removed to University Hospital Tralee and the road has since reopened to traffic.

The couple were due to return home to Germany in the coming days after their holiday in Ireland.

Gardai have appealed for any witnesses to get in contact.

The 456m (1,496ft) high Conor Pass is considered one of the most famous and difficult climbs for cyclists in Ireland.
