Woman and girl die in home blaze

A girl aged nine and a woman aged 87 have died in a house fire in Co Wexford.

Emergency services were called to a house near Enniscorthy at around 12.30am to tackle the blaze.

The woman who died was living in the house.

The nine-year-old girl was staying in the house with her mother and her mother's partner.

The child's mother and her partner were returning to the house from a night out when they discovered the fire, according to RTE.

The woman's partner, a man in his 50s, tried to get in to the house, and was injured. He is being treated in hospital in St Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin.

Fianna Fail TD John Browne said there is a huge amount of shock and sadness in the area today.
