Robbie Keane still gutted by World Cup exit, says wife

Published 23/12/2009

Claudine Keane has revealed how she doesn't think her football star husband Robbie will ever get over the disappointment of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup exit.

And she relayed the moment when she realised the Republic captain’s dream was over after Frances’s Thierry Henry handled the ball before the winning goal in Paris.

“I was sitting there in Paris, and when Robbie scored, I was just over the moon,” said Claudia.

“Everyone was hugging me and we were all screaming our heads off, we were so excited.

“There were a load of the players' families all sitting together and supporting each other — the atmosphere was great. We all thought they were really going to do it.

“But when we saw the French goal go in, I could feel the tears welling up — no-one could believe it, and then everyone started commiserating with me.

“It was like going from an extreme high to an extreme low within a few minutes. I was devastated. I don't think I'll ever get over it — nor will Rob.”

The Dublin native also revealed how she had dreamed of bringing their baby boy Robbie jnr over to see his father play in South Africa next summer.

“I would have loved to have been able to say to him when he's older how he was there when his father played in the World Cup. That was always the dream,” she said.
