Security alert after explosion in car

Published 30/11/2009

People were evacuated from their homes during a security alert in east Belfast last night.

A householder in Ormiston Crescent called police after there was a small explosion in his car, parked in the driveway of his home.

It is understood the man had earlier turned off his battery because he thought the car had been tampered with. When he reconnected it there was a small explosion and flames.

Army Technical Officers were called and Ormiston Crescent and some other streets in the area were sealed off. Residents in the area were advised to leave their homes while a controlled explosion was carried out.

Robin Newton, the area’s DUP Assembly member, said the householder was right to be vigilant.

“It is right for every individual to be vigilant as people have been wrongly targeted,” he said.
