Smiles from Special Olympics successes
The biggest sporting event staged in Ireland this year drew to a close yesterday after four days of competition.
Over 1,900 athletes, representing all 32 counties, took part in the Special Olympics Ireland games at venues across counties Limerick and Clare.
“It's been the best yet, and we are so proud of how everything went,” Matt English, the event's CEO, said yesterday.
More than 10,000 people turned up to support athletes in 14 different sports. At yesterday's closing ceremony at the University of Limerick, former Irish rugby captain Keith Wood said: “The overwhelming sense is of joy in every single place — joy on the faces of the families, joy on the athletes' faces, joy on the faces of the volunteers.”
