Tributes at Titanic memorial

Published 30/11/2009

Belfast Titanic Society has marked the 50th anniversary of the relocation of the Titanic Memorial into the grounds of the City Hall.

In November 1959 the process was begun to relocate the memorial from Donegall Square North. After 39 years its position in the middle of the road had become a traffic hazard.

Society chairman Una Reilly said: “Descendants of those whose names are inscribed on the Titanic Memorial came together along with Titanic Society members and Belfast city councillors to mark this date. Many people are unaware of the Titanic Memorial’s location in Belfast and we feel we should draw attention to its presence in the city.”
