The UK Border Agency has seized nearly two million illegally imported cigarettes from incoming passengers into Northern Ireland during the last few months, its chief has claimed.
Brodie Clark, head of the UK Border Agency, was yesterday speaking on a visit to two of Northern Ireland's airports — Belfast International and City of Derry.
He was in Northern Ireland to see how staff at the new agency, formed in 2008, are working together.
He added that his staff has also seized over £31,000 that being taken out of Northern Ireland which was suspected of being proceeds of crime.
At the same time more than 40 illegal immigrants were prevented from entering Northern Ireland.
