Adlington relieved to keep medals

Swimming star Rebecca Adlington has thanked fans for their concern after she tweeted that she feared her Olympic medals had been stolen during a break-in at her home.

The double Olympic champion tweeted that she was "shaking" and "in absolute pieces" after receiving the news of the break-in just after midnight.

Miss Adlington was in London with her fiance Harry Needs at the time, having returned from a holiday.

The 24-year-old tweeted that she feared her medals had been stolen during the break-in at her home in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

But police who were called to the scene confirmed Mr Needs's black Audi A3 and a laptop were the only things to be taken from the gold medal-winning swimmer's home.

Writing on her website, Miss Adlington, who is originally from Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, said: "When I heard that they weren't there my immediate reaction was an emotional one as I put so much effort into winning them.

"I also know that you can't insure Olympic medals, and although you can get them replaced - I'd know they weren't the originals."

She added: "As anyone who has ever been burgled knows, it's a horrible feeling, but we're now leaving everything to the police - who have been great in dealing with this upsetting episode.

"Also, thank you to everyone who has been in touch to show their concern, just shows that the vast majority of people are decent human beings - unlike those who broke into my house last night."

Greater Manchester Police said inquiries are ongoing into the burglary.
