Royal Ascot welcomed a rare guest for a day of racing: Sarah, Duchess of York, in the company of her ex-husband the Duke.

Sarah and Andrew remain close friends despite divorcing in 1996 and are known to holiday together in Switzerland.

They were immaculately dressed for the annual event that attracts racegoers from across the country.

They were joined by their daughters Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and it was one of the few occasions the four of them had been pictured at a public social event.

When the Queen arrived in the traditional carriage procession Sarah curtseyed to her while Andrew, dressed in top hat and tails, took off his hat and bowed.

The group watched the racing from a box and could be seen laughing and chatting as the races were held.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were in the royal box where their party were enjoying the day.

They were joined by their granddaughter Zara Phillips and her husband, the former England rugby player Mike Tindall.
