Burglars burn man with clothes iron
Intruders have burned a man in his 60s on the back with a clothes iron during a terrifying raid on a couple in their home.
Two men went through a window into a house in Woodman Lane, Sewardstonebury, near Chingford, at 4.45am on Sunday, Essex Police said.
They demanded the couple open the safe, but they do not have one, and the man was then burned on the back with the iron.
The robbers tied them up before stealing high value jewellery including rings, necklaces, cufflinks and watches.
The man was taken to Whipps Cross Hospital, north-east London, and transferred for treatment at the specialist burns unit at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford.
Police, who said the couple were left traumatised by the incident, appealed for information to catch the men responsible.
No vehicle was heard or seen, and the robbers wore balaclavas and gloves.
A police spokesman said: "This was an absolutely terrifying ordeal for the couple. The robbers used completely unnecessary violence on the victim, leaving him with a very serious burn.
"I urge anyone who has any information about who is responsible to contact detectives at Loughton on 0300 333 4444 or give information anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
