Chart return for Christmas classics

Festive music fans have sent two classic Christmas hits back into the UK top 40.

Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You leads the seasonal favourites at number 22 in the singles chart this week, up from 48 last week.

Fairytale of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl is in 27th place.

The song was first released in 1987 by the Irish rock band but in the past few years it has crept back into the charts during the festive period.

Meanwhile, Coldplay entered the charts with their new festive tune, Christmas Lights, in 18th position.

But while festive favourites returned to the top 40 once again, the X Factor tightened its grip on the charts.

The finalists held on to the number one spot with their charity single Heroes, a cover of the David Bowie hit which the contestants recorded in aid of Help For Heroes.

Olly Murs, another chart-storming pop act who owes his career to the ITV show, clung on to the number four spot with his single Thinking Of Me.

Boy band JLS, who were runners-up on the competition in 2008, are at number 10 with their hit Love You More - which previously topped the charts.

Meanwhile in the album charts, the quartet's track Outta This World is in third place while Murs's self-titled debut album entered at number two behind Take That's Progress.
