Club sacks child abuse football star Adam Johnson
England star Adam Johnson has been sacked by Sunderland Football Club after admitting charges of grooming and sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.
The 28-year-old will go on trial today at Bradford Crown Court on two further counts of sexual activity with the girl, which he denies.
Sunderland said in a statement last night his contract had been terminated. The club added: "In light of Adam Johnson's guilty pleas, the club has terminated his contract with immediate effect."
The news came hours after boot sponsor Adidas announced it had terminated his deal.
The £10m player, signed from Manchester City, had denied all the charges against him until a hearing on Wednesday.
