Don't call us fat and lazy, warns police chief
Police morale is falling to new lows after being branded, thick, fat and lazy, with a police chief warning that officers could soon start to believe the myth.
The warning, from Derek Barnett, president of the Police Superintendents’ Association, follows proposals by lawyer Tom Winsor, who is proposed to take over the role of Chief Inspector of Constabulary, that tougher entrance tests be imposed so policing would appeal to the “brightest and the best”.
Mr Winsor, whose appointment would anger police chiefs due to his never having been an officer, is also calling for officers who fail compulsory fitness tests to have their pay docked and maybe even sacked.
Mr Barnett said in the Daily Mail: “There’s only so much that you can take before you start thinking that there may be some truth in it.”
