Elderly woman dies in home fire

An elderly woman has died in a fire at a retirement home apartment block, according to police.

Thames Valley Police were alerted to the blaze at the property in Elm Lane, Lower Earley, Reading, by the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service at 2.50pm.

An elderly woman was found deceased at the scene.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Healey said: "It is a very early stage in the investigation and we are currently trying to establish the cause of the fire.

"It is being treated as unexplained at this time, however, we are carrying out investigations which will allow us to confirm if there is cause for suspicion.

"The building was initially evacuated, but most residents have now been able to return to their homes, excluding those in the immediate vicinity."
