Ex-officer in court over murder
A former police marksman is due to appear in court today charged with murdering a robbery suspect.
The ex-Metropolitan Police officer is accused of deliberately killing Azelle Rodney, who was shot by police in Edgware, north London, in April 2005.
Mr Rodney, 24, died after officers stopped the car he was travelling in with two other men, fearing that they were on their way to rob Colombian drug dealers and had a sub-machine gun.
Mr Rodney was hit six times, once each in the arm and back, and fatally four times in the head.
The officer who is currently known only as E7 after he was granted anonymity by an inquiry into Mr Rodney's death, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court.
The Crown Prosecution Service announced it planned to charge the officer in July, after reviewing new evidence following the outcome of the public inquiry into Mr Rodney's death.
